Naphthenate Control


Calcium naphthenate-related flow assurance problems are an increasingly recognised cause of production losses in some oil fields.

While not a common problem, where they do exist, the consequences on production (revenue), health, safety, and environmental impacts can be extreme. Other types of naphthenates of significance are sodium and potassium emulsion soaps as well as the rarer high-calcium content export crudes and calcium emulsion soap cases. All of these can have a major impact on the separation performance of oilfield facilities. Much research and development work is ongoing in Cestoil Chemical to understand all aspects of naphthenate soaps in oilfield systems. We focus upon calcium and sodium naphthenates as they are the most common types found in the field.
