Turning that principle into a reliable operating program, however, requires more than selecting the product with the highest result in a laboratory screening test. Fluid composition, temperature, flow regime, pipeline configuration, injection conditions and mechanical shear can all influence field performance.

The purpose of laboratory work is to identify suitable candidates and define a practical starting range. The purpose of a field trial is to determine whether the selected chemistry produces a repeatable hydraulic benefit under the actual constraints of the pipeline.

1. Define the operating objective

The evaluation should begin with a clear objective. A pipeline operator may want to increase throughput while staying within a pressure limit, reduce pressure drop at a fixed flow rate, lower pumping demand, or restore capacity during a seasonal or product-specific constraint.

Before adding DRA, the team should establish a stable baseline and record the variables that control the comparison: flow rate, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, fluid density and viscosity, pump configuration, valve position, batch identity and pipeline operating condition. A percentage reduction without a comparable baseline can be misleading.

2. Use laboratory testing to screen the application

Laboratory evaluation should use a representative hydrocarbon sample and test across a relevant range of temperatures, flow conditions and treat rates. A rotating-disk device or flow loop can help compare candidates and build a dose-response curve. Compatibility, dispersion, pumpability and low-temperature handling also matter because the product must remain usable from storage through injection.

High-molecular-weight polymer DRAs can lose effectiveness when exposed to severe mechanical shear. Test design should therefore consider mixing energy, recirculation and the equipment that the treated fluid may encounter. Laboratory results are most useful for ranking candidates and identifying sensitivities; they do not by themselves guarantee full-scale performance.

3. Design a controlled field trial

A field trial should be conducted during a stable operating period with calibrated injection and measurement equipment. Where practical, the injection point should provide adequate mixing while limiting unnecessary exposure to high-shear equipment. The trial plan should define the baseline period, dosage steps, stabilization time and the data to be collected at each step.

Pressure, flow and temperature should be recorded continuously. Product movements, pump changes, valve movements and other operational events should also be logged so that their effects can be separated from the response to DRA. Stepwise dosing usually provides more useful information than a single high-dose test because it reveals the shape of the field dose-response relationship.

4. Compare results on a like-for-like basis

Field data should be compared at equivalent conditions. If the objective is pressure reduction, compare pressure drop at a similar flow rate. If the objective is increased throughput, compare flow at the same governing pressure or equipment limit. Changes in fluid properties, temperature, pipeline lineup and pump operation should be accounted for before attributing the result to the additive.

The review should also include product quality and downstream requirements. The transported fluid, terminal operations, interface management and final use determine which compatibility and regulatory checks are necessary. A successful hydraulic result must remain compatible with the complete handling and delivery system.

5. Convert the trial into an operating program

After a successful trial, the operating procedure should define the approved treat-rate range, storage and injection requirements, monitoring points and response to changing flow or product conditions. Performance should be reviewed when the fluid slate, temperature, pipeline configuration or equipment changes.

A sound DRA program delivers a repeatable benefit within the pipeline’s operating and product-quality constraints. Cestoil works with pipeline operators to connect laboratory screening with field trial design and ongoing performance review.

Learn more about Cestoil’s <a
