The operating challenge

Changes in crude supply can affect emulsion stability, water separation and solids removal. A persistent interface layer, oil in desalter effluent or water remaining in treated crude may indicate that the treatment and operating conditions need to be reviewed together.

The assessment starts upstream of the desalter. Storage, blending sequence and residence time can influence the feed that reaches the unit.

Build a baseline

Review representative crude samples, blend changes and operating records before selecting a treatment. Distinguish water, salt and suspended solids measurements; a change in one does not establish that the others have improved.

  • Crude blend composition, water and salt content, and relevant solids or metals
  • Tank temperature, residence time, interface condition and water-draw arrangements
  • Desalter wash water, mixing conditions, electrical stability and effluent quality

Coordinate the treatment

Cestoil evaluates pretreatment and demulsifier options against the intended crude and separation conditions. Tank-farm pretreatment can be considered where additional contact and settling time are available. Desalter treatment is then assessed with the actual blend and existing operating program.

Where blend compatibility or an iron- or calcium-related issue is identified, the evaluation may include an additional treatment component. Its interaction with demulsification and the handling of separated water and solids need to be checked; not all metal species respond in the same way.

Evaluate both sides of the separation

Compare treated-crude water and salt, interface behavior, desalter operating stability and oil in effluent. Record blend, temperature and throughput changes alongside these observations.

Use laboratory comparisons to select candidates, then assess the program under controlled plant conditions. Cleaner-looking water alone does not demonstrate improvement in every wastewater parameter.

Define the application limits

Treatment selection depends on the crude and the available equipment. Set the trial objectives, operating boundaries and monitoring plan with the refinery team. Product-specific handling and treatment guidance should be established for the selected formulation.
