Identify where performance is changing

Fouling in a hydrotreating unit can appear as rising pressure drop, reduced heat recovery or deposits found during inspection. The feed side of exchangers, heater surfaces, reactor beds and effluent cooling system do not necessarily experience the same mechanism.

Treat the location of the problem as a starting point for diagnosis. A program intended for feed instability should not be assumed to address every type of reactor or effluent-side deposit.

Understand the deposit and feed

The source material describes organic deposits associated with unstable feed components, iron-related solids and salt deposition in the effluent system. Deposit findings and feed history help determine which of these mechanisms warrants investigation.

  • Feed composition, blend changes, storage history and possible oxygen exposure
  • Available deposit analysis and evidence of upstream solids or corrosion products
  • Pressure, temperature and throughput trends across the affected equipment

Select chemistry around the mechanism

Cestoil evaluates dispersant, antioxidant and polymerization-control approaches where they are relevant to the identified feed-side problem. The choice depends on whether the objective is to limit deposit formation, manage dispersed material or address a combination of effects.

Review the selected chemistry with the catalyst system, upstream additions and downstream requirements. Effluent-side salt or corrosion problems require their own assessment of the water, contaminants and operating conditions.

Measure performance in context

Track pressure-drop development and the relevant exchanger temperatures or heat-transfer indicators over time. Interpret the trend alongside flow, feed composition and other operating changes; an unadjusted before-and-after pressure comparison can be misleading.

A trial should establish which measurements will be compared, how operating changes will be recorded and what findings would prompt review. Treatment is not a universal method for reversing an already restricted reactor bed.

Connect prevention with operations

Changes to feed handling, oxygen exposure or upstream contamination may be part of the response. Chemical treatment should be evaluated alongside those actions and the unit’s established operating limits.
