Fuel antioxidants are used to limit oxidation reactions that can affect fuel quality during storage and distribution. Selection depends on fuel composition, existing stability, handling conditions and the properties to be maintained.

Oxidation can contribute to gum, peroxide and insoluble-material formation. Fuels containing reactive components, including some cracked or high-olefin streams, may require particular attention during blending and storage.
Antioxidant treatment can interrupt oxidation reactions. Starting fuel quality and treatment timing matter. Gasoline, middle-distillate and renewable-fuel blends require individual application reviews.
