Hot, viscous hydrocarbons can be difficult to treat because contact is limited and sulfur compounds may continue to appear during transfer or storage. The treatment must also fit downstream metal and ash requirements.

Northshore MS9268 provides a zinc-carboxylate route for the identified reactive sulfur species in an oil-soluble carrier. It is evaluated where metal addition is acceptable. Its PDS identifies refined fuel, crude, residue and asphalt applications, but a finished-fuel use still requires separate compatibility and specification review.
