Understand the isomer profile

Iso-oleic acid contains a mixture of branched and linear fatty acids. The distribution of branched and positional isomers is relevant to handling behavior and downstream use.

Selection should consider the actual composition and process requirements, with properties evaluated for both the supplied material and the product made from it.

Choose the conversion route

Application routes include esterification with alcohols or polyols, conversion into surfactants and dispersants, and use as a modifying fatty acid in resins. Hydrogenation provides a route to branched saturated fatty acids.

These uses have different reaction requirements. Assess the feedstock against the chemistry and properties needed in the resulting intermediate or formulation.
