Fuel Performance
Fuel Lubricity Improvers
Northshore lubricity improvers are fuel additives used to improve the lubricating properties of diesel, including ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). They are used in refinery and terminal blending programs when the fuel needs treatment to meet a defined lubricity requirement.

Application and function
Fuel lubricity is relevant to wear in fuel-injection equipment. Lubricity additives are evaluated where the base fuel needs treatment to achieve a defined lubricity target.
The Northshore range includes fatty-acid, ester and hybrid formulations. The appropriate chemistry and treatment level depend on the fuel, the complete additive package and storage and dosing conditions.

| COLI9500H | Acid–ester hybrid chemistry | Compare fuel-specific dosage response and low-temperature handling. |
| COLI9510 | Tall-oil fatty-acid (TOFA) chemistry | Maintain a familiar chemistry route while reviewing fuel response. |
Pipeline and EI 1535 requirements
Cestoil’s 2026 brochure identifies COLI9500, COLI9500E and COLI9500ES in its EI 1535 qualification information. Request current documentation for the exact grade and confirm the operator’s conditions before selection. The brochure does not identify COLI9500H or COLI9510 as qualified options.
Discuss your pipeline requirementsA measured response in a specific diesel sample
Cestoil’s 2026 brochure reports the following COLI9500 result using the HFRR method (ASTM D6079) in a Canadian ultra-low-sulfur diesel sample (10 ppm sulfur), at an additive dosage of 200 mg/kg.
This result is specific to the tested fuel. The appropriate product and dosage must be established in your blend against your required target.

Why does ultra-low-sulfur diesel need a lubricity improver?
The refining needed to produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel can also reduce components that contribute to lubricity. Sulfur content alone therefore does not tell you how a fuel will perform in a lubricity test. Establish the untreated fuel’s HFRR result and compare it with the required target. Cestoil can then help shortlist Northshore grades for evaluation in that fuel, rather than recommending a dosage from sulfur content alone.
What does an HFRR result tell me?
HFRR measures a wear scar under defined laboratory conditions. A lower wear-scar value indicates better lubricity in that test, but it is not a direct measurement of engine life. Compare untreated and treated fuel using the same method and judge the results against your applicable specification or contract. If you have a laboratory report, share it with Cestoil so the test conditions and treatment objective can be reviewed together.
What is the difference between fatty-acid, ester, and blended lubricity improvers?
These are different chemistry options within the Northshore range. COLI9500 and COLI9500E use soybean fatty-acid chemistry; COLI9510 uses tall-oil fatty-acid chemistry. COLI9500ES is the ester option, while COLI9500H combines acid and ester chemistry. Selection depends on the fuel’s response, handling conditions, other additives, and treatment cost. In particular, COLI9500E should not be confused with the ester grade COLI9500ES.
Which Northshore lubricity improver should I evaluate first?
Start with COLI9500 for a conventional ULSD comparison. Consider COLI9500E when economics are important and low-temperature handling requirements are less demanding; COLI9500ES when formulation compatibility is a priority; COLI9500H for a dose-optimization comparison in demanding fuels; and COLI9510 when a TOFA route is preferred. These are shortlisting criteria. Cestoil can help choose candidates after reviewing your fuel, target, storage conditions, and any pipeline requirements.
How much lubricity improver should I add?
The appropriate dosage depends on the untreated fuel and the required result. For example, Cestoil’s 2026 brochure reports COLI9500 reducing HFRR wear scar from 600 to 380 µm at 200 mg/kg in one Canadian diesel sample. That result is a reference for evaluation, not a universal dosage recommendation. Test a dosage series in your fuel and compare the resulting treatment cost. Contact Cestoil to discuss suitable trial levels.
How do I choose a product for cold-weather storage and dosing?
Share the lowest expected storage and transfer temperatures, storage duration, and dosing arrangement. Product selection should follow the current handling guidance for the exact grade. A pour point is not a guaranteed minimum pumping or storage temperature. COLI9500E is an economical candidate where low-temperature requirements are less demanding; compare it with other Northshore options if cold handling is critical. Request the product data and handling recommendations before an evaluation.
Can I use these products with cetane improvers, detergents, and other additives?
Compatibility should be evaluated in the complete intended formulation at the planned concentrations and under relevant storage conditions. A successful test with one mixture does not establish compatibility with all additive packages. COLI9500ES is an option to consider when compatibility is a particular concern. Tell Cestoil which additives you use and how they are introduced, so the evaluation can address the actual blend and operating conditions.
How can I request a sample, product recommendation, or quotation?
Use our sample or contact form and mention Northshore lubricity improvers and any grade you are considering, including COLI9500E. Helpful details include the fuel type, untreated HFRR result, target, lowest handling temperature, other additives, and expected volume. You can still contact us if some details are unknown. Cestoil can help define the evaluation, recommend candidate grades, and prepare a quotation for the proposed treatment.
