Dimer acids are derived from unsaturated fatty acids. The distribution of dimeric, monomeric and trimeric components is relevant to reactivity and formulation behavior.

Applications in fluids and resins

Documented use areas include oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids, lubricants, greases, metalworking fluids and rust-preventive formulations. Dimer acids also serve as intermediates for polyamide resins, surfactants and other additives.

Define the intended role: a fluid trial may focus on lubricity or rheology, while synthesis requires attention to composition and reaction behavior.
