H₂S & Mercaptan Treatment
Hydrogen sulfide in a liquid stream can also create a vapor-space exposure during storage and transfer. Cestoil helps select liquid scavengers or gas-phase solid media according to the sulfur species, stream conditions and required outlet result.
Discuss your application
Start with the treatment duty
H₂S and mercaptans are different targets. In crude, fuels and residues, the liquid concentration and the vapor above the liquid may tell different stories; temperature, viscosity, agitation and available headspace all affect what is measured during transfer. A scavenger program should specify which phase and which sulfur species must meet the target.
These treatments address selected reactive sulfur species. They do not remove total sulfur from a fuel or substitute for a site H₂S safety program. Gas-treatment solvents are a separate application family.
How to select a starting route
Use the matrix to narrow the chemistry for bench and field evaluation. It is not a dosing chart or an automatic product recommendation.
| Duty | Starting route | Check before selection |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas, renewable gas or biogas in a fixed bed | Iron oxide-hydroxide solid media, including Northshore MS9264 | Inlet H₂S load, gas flow, temperature, pressure, required outlet concentration and bed changeout plan. Gas phase only. |
| Hot asphalt, residue or crude where metal addition is acceptable | Oil-soluble zinc chemistry: Northshore MS9268 or Northshore MS9276 | Operating temperature, mixing, reaction-product behavior and downstream metals or ash limits. |
| Gas or aqueous H₂S service suitable for liquid injection | Water-based triazine route: Northshore MS9278 | Water tolerance, temperature, dispersion, contact time and spent-chemistry handling. Confirm current grade documents. |
| Crude, residue or other hydrocarbon service where water addition is undesirable | Oil-soluble amine–aldehyde route: Northshore MS9281A | Temperature, injection, residence time, destination fuel specification and current technical data. |
| Mercaptan-led odor, acidity or copper-strip issue in a hydrocarbon stream | Northshore MS9281 quaternary ammonium hydroxide | Measure mercaptans separately from H₂S; verify fuel quality and compatibility after treatment. |
Finished marine fuel and other tightly specified streams require a separate review of metal, water, ash and other product limits. Do not carry a hot-residue formulation over to a finished fuel without qualification.

- Establish a fresh baseline. Record liquid-phase H₂S, vapor-space H₂S where relevant, mercaptan content, temperature and the agreed acceptance tests. Samples can lose H₂S during handling.
- Match contact to chemistry. For liquids, review injection point, turbulence, residence time, tank circulation and separation. For solid gas media, size the bed for the gas load and monitor outlet H₂S for breakthrough.
- Verify the complete result. Compare treated and untreated representative samples using agreed analytical methods. Check copper corrosion where relevant, as well as solids, phase behavior and downstream specifications. Odor alone is not a measurement.
Dosage or bed life cannot be stated as a universal number: both depend on actual sulfur loading, contact efficiency and the required outlet target.
